I Know Chicago

Purveyor of all things interesting, amazing, unique, unusual + badass in Chicago.

Bread + Wine

Get Excited! The much anticipated opening of Bread & Wine, a neighborhood American bistro, wine bar and market on Chicago’s Northwest Side, is scheduled for mid-January 2012.

Focusing on farm to table fare, Bread & Wine is dedicated to elevated, nostalgic, Midwestern fare.

Owners Lisa Fosler Kelly, a lawyer, chef and the wine manager, and Jennifer Wisniewski, an experienced restaurant manager and developer who was involved in Naha and Café Absinthe, have partnered with chef Curtis Gamble, a veteran of the bourgeoning restaurant scene in Pittsburgh, to launch this restaurant in a neighborhood that is
ready for a restaurant revolution.

“I am thrilled to launch Bread & Wine,” says executive chef Curtis Gamble. “We will serve
both hearty fare, like our beef and chorizo burger with Wisconsin cheddar and red onion jam on a pretzel roll, as well as lighter fare, such as pumpkin seed crusted tofu with lentils and pickled oyster mushrooms.” After Chef Curtis Gamble attended the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts in Pittsburgh, he worked his way through Pittsburgh’s growing restaurant scene, culminating with a position as executive sous chef at the critically acclaimed Six Penn Kitchen.

Visitors will be able to sit at the open kitchen and watch dinner being prepared, or stake out a spot in the dining room with friends. The menu items are designed to highlight the different ethnicities in the area.

An afternoon bar menu will also be offered and will include snacks like fried pickles with Tobasco aioli, duck confit pierogis, and chorizo tacos with picked cactus. The
desserts will be amazing, such as their chocolate pecan bread pudding with vanilla whiskey sauce.

Bread & Wine will offer 10 to 15 wines by the glass and many interesting wines by the
bottle. They will also stock a full bar, and beer and wine will be sold in their market.

Bread & Wine’s market will specialize in private label retail items, such as their own housemade 5-nut granola, curry coconut cashews, rosemary and sea salt almonds, and spiced bacon walnut brittle (private label retail items are currently for sale through Bread & Wine’s website).

The market will also stock off the shelf fare from local artisans and a selection of carefully chosen wine, beer and spirits. Local artisanal items will include jams from Quince & Apple, honey from Chicago Honey Co-op, crackers from Potter’s Crackers, pickles from McClure’s, pasta from Pasta Puttana, and coffee from Intelligentsia.

Bread & Wine will host “Meet the Maker” tastings, as well as other community building culinary events.

Bread & Wine will be open 3:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 3:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m. Friday & Saturday with a snacks & small plates menu 3:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. every day.
